Sumber Co Sdn. Bhd. (formerly known as Sumber Engineering (M) Sdn. Bhd.) is an offspring of Sumber Group Companies operating in Singapore and Indonesia. The founding Chairman, the late Mr. Chng Gim Cheng, first formed Sumber Trading Co. in 1968 as a trading arm to procure and provide financial facilities to associates and joint venture partners in Indonesia, from distributing food and hygiene items, and industrial products from Americas, China, Europe, Japan and Taiwan. Then Sumber Group focused mainly in trading activities, who are also ship owners, in Indonesia.

Sumber Group through one of the JV formed in 1976 in Indonesia distributed Hitachi brand electric power tools and industrial equipment and components in Indonesia. Following in 1978, Sumber Co Sdn Bhd., and Sumber Co Pte Ltd., (both formerly known as Sumber Engineering) in Malaysia and Singapore, were established to undertake the marketing and distribution of Hitachi brand industrial equipment and components in the 2 countries.
